CHAPTER 13

Friday morning, I called to invite Sarah over for breakfast, making good on my vow to be better about including her, but she explained she couldn’t leave the B&B at breakfast time.

“Of course,” I said. “I’m so sorry. I wasn’t thinking. How about lunch one day?”

“I’d like that,” she said with a smile I could hear through the phone.

Irma and Freddie arrived within minutes of each other, almost like they had smelled the cooking from their respective homes. I placed two bacon and egg bites in front of each of them along with a thick slice of coffee cake.

“Sarah gave me a recipe for a breakfast casserole she made yesterday, and I baked it in muffin tins. What do you think?”

“They’re delicious,” Freddie said. “Are you trying to butter me up for some reason?”

I laughed. “Not at the moment, but I think I’m pretty smart to stay on your good side. After all, I’m not getting any younger.”

“You?” Irma groused. “I’m nearly twice your age and I’m holding up pretty well if I do say so myself. All you need to do is stay fit and eat right.” She gobbled down half her food and gave a contented sigh. “I need to visit Sarah more often if this is the sort of thing she makes for her guests. Last time I stopped by, all I got was a muffin.”

“Mooch,” I said, and she stuck her tongue out at me in response. “Sarah really is a nice lady.”

“Who really likes to talk,” Irma said. She must have seen the scolding look I gave her, because she gave me a smirk and added, “Yep, a very nice lady. Who bakes wonderful muffins.” She gave me a thumbs up for emphasis.

“She’s also volunteered to help me put together an event in September sometime after Labor Day when the summer crowds have died down.”

Irma snickered. “Crowds might be overstating it, don’t you think?”

“You looked pretty darn busy the last time I went to the Mermaid Café,” I said, but my comment only received a shrug in response.

Freddie at least seemed interested. “What sort of event are you and Sarah planning?”

“A psychic fair. Although I don’t think that’s what we’ll call it. Maybe a New Age Fest or something.”

Irma made a face expressing her obvious disapproval. “Ugh. New Age. I suppose someone will read my aura and tell me it’s full of negativity. Then they’ll offer to cleanse it for fifty bucks.”

“I think aura cleansing services have increased in price,” Freddie joked. “I’d expect to pay eighty dollars at least. Though you may have to pay extra.”

Irma stuck her tongue out at Freddie.

I did my best to keep them from deflating my enthusiasm. “I don’t believe in psychics, but I do enjoy having my palm read. Did you know Sarah reads tarot cards?”

Freddie straightened in her seat. “What date in September?” she asked eagerly.

“Not sure.” I felt pleased that at least one person liked my idea. “I thought maybe mid-month.”

“How about September 18th?” Freddie suggested.
